Dr. James Petros, MD, founder of NexGen Health in San Jose

Six Board Certifications in Pain, Regenerative, and Longevity Medicine

Dr. Petros’s certifications cover both conventional and integrative medicine, which allows him to evaluate a concern through more than one clinical lens. A patient with persistent joint pain and low energy, for example, may benefit from a musculoskeletal assessment and a closer look at metabolic and nutritional factors in the same visit.

  • Interventional Pain Management: Image-guided procedures and targeted treatment for spine, joint, and nerve pain.
  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation: Restoring mobility and function after injury, surgery, or chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Sports Medicine: Nonsurgical care for athletic injuries and for active adults who want to stay in motion.
  • Regenerative Medicine: Certified by the American Board of Regenerative Medicine, with a focus on therapies that support the body’s own repair processes.
  • Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine: Certified by the American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine, the certifying board affiliated with the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.
  • Functional Medicine: Looking for underlying contributors such as nutrient status, metabolic health, and lifestyle rather than treating symptoms in isolation.

He has also completed additional certification training in peptide therapy and longevity medicine, which informs the personalized protocols available through peptide therapy and The NexGen Blueprint™.

Medical Education and Stanford Postgraduate Training

Dr. Petros’s medical foundation began at Tulane University School of Medicine, where he graduated at the top of his class. He then spent seven years in postgraduate training at Stanford University School of Medicine, building deep expertise in diagnosing and treating pain, injury, and musculoskeletal disorders. His education also includes study at the University of California, San Francisco, Cornell University, and Santa Clara University, along with an MBA that supports his leadership of multidisciplinary medical organizations.

That combination of academic medicine and business training shapes how NexGen Health operates. Patients benefit from physician oversight grounded in evidence, supported by systems designed to make care coordinated, accessible, and consistent from the first consultation through follow-up.

Professional Affiliations, Educational Networks & Certifications

Dr. Petros stays engaged with the organizations that set clinical standards and provide continuing education in his fields of practice.

  • American Board of Regenerative Medicine (ABRM): Board certification in regenerative medicine.
  • American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine (ABAARM): Board certification in anti-aging and regenerative medicine.
  • American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M): Member of the professional society dedicated to longevity and preventive medicine education.
  • Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM): Member of the national organization representing physicians who specialize in hospital-based patient care.
  • International Spine Intervention Society (ISIS): Member of the society, now known as the Spine Intervention Society, which promotes evidence-based standards for interventional spine procedures.
  • American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM): Member of the association focused on nerve and muscle disorders and electrodiagnostic testing such as EMG and nerve conduction studies.
  • Seeds Scientific Research & Performance Institute (SSRP): Participates in this physician educational network focused on peptide research and clinical application, as part of NexGen Health’s commitment to ongoing education.

A Whole-Person Approach to Wellness and Recovery

Dr. Petros believes good medicine starts with listening. Rather than applying a single protocol to every patient, he looks at health history, current symptoms, lab findings, and personal goals together, then builds a plan that addresses the underlying causes of pain, injury, and age-related decline whenever possible. He is candid about what a therapy can and cannot do, and he encourages patients to ask questions before committing to any treatment.

“Pain, fatigue, and aging rarely have a single cause. My job is to look at the full picture, explain what the evidence shows and where it is still developing, and build a plan that fits the person in front of me.” — Dr. James Petros

Leadership in Pain, Spine, and Regenerative Care Across Silicon Valley

Throughout his career in interventional and regenerative medicine, Dr. Petros has focused on building multidisciplinary teams and treatment models that put the patient at the center. Through Allied Pain & Spine Institute, a multidisciplinary pain and spine practice serving the South Bay and East Bay, and Trinity Surgery Center, he has helped shape how patients across the region access coordinated, specialist-level care.

His influence extends beyond clinical practice. Dr. Petros serves as a consultant for Boston Scientific and as Chief Medical Officer of Karuna Labs, and he has contributed to the field as a clinician, educator, consultant, speaker, and researcher. That breadth of experience gives NexGen Health patients access to a physician who follows emerging technology closely and evaluates it with a critical eye.

How Dr. Petros Guides Your Care at NexGen Health

Every NexGen Health program operates under physician oversight. Dr. Petros and the clinical team use consultation, testing, and ongoing monitoring to determine whether a service is appropriate for you. Areas of care include:

Some regenerative therapies, including exosome and VSEL treatments, are considered investigational and are not FDA approved to treat specific conditions. Dr. Petros reviews the current evidence, potential risks, and realistic expectations with each patient before recommending them, and results vary from person to person.
